During the week of the Festival, 13 feature films and 29 international short films will be planned for all audiences for free. A special cycle will recognize the figure of Paul Lukas, a daring actor of the time of cinema the golden hollywoodiense who resided in BenalmádenA.

The 22 International Benalmádena Festival (FICCAB) announced this Wednesday the winners of the International Awards of the edition to be held between October 28 and November 4, with the House of Culture as a backdrop. In this new event with alternative cinema, the German filmmaker Volker Schlöndorff, actress María de Medeiros and Armenian filmmaker Harutun Jacatrian will be awarded. This was presented by the City Council of Benalmádena, Jesica Trujillo, with the director of the Festival, Jaime Noguera.

The FICCAB will award the International Award to the filmmaker Volker Schlöndorff, director of the famous film "El tambor de hojalata," based on Günter Grass's novel and awarded the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival in 1,979 and the Oscar to the Best Foreign Film in 1,980. The Contest thus awards the trajectory of a filmmaker recognized as one of the largest filmmakers of European cinema. The award will be awarded during the inaugural gala to be held on Saturday, 28 October, at 9 p.m. in the House of Culture of Arroyo de la Honey.

That same night, the work of the actress and singer Maria de Medeiros, outstanding for her role in films such as' Pulp Fiction 'or' Henry and June ', will be recognized with the' International Leadership Award '. The third prize of the gala will be Armenian director Harutun Jacatrian, who will receive the award' A Life of Cinema ', which pays tribute to his great work in the Armenian film industry.

In addition to the international awards, the Festival will devote a cycle to the film of Volker Schlöndorff, in which the films' The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum 'will be projected, where it is reported the story of a German servant who falls in love with a terrorist and becomes the main suspect of his murder. The cycle is complemented by 'Diplomacy', set in Paris during the last days of German rule in the French capital, and 'The Tin drum', the most well-known and awarded tape by Scholöndorff.

Programming

In today's event, the titles that make up part of the show's programming, made up of 13 feature and 29 short films, have also been presented. Among the features that can be enjoyed in the Casa de la Cultura de Arroyo de la Honey and the Exhibition Centre of Benalmádena Costa, the leaders of the Festival have presented the features that are part of the section 'Other Watches'.

Among the titles included in this cycle will be the film 'Liuben', by Verci Kostov, a drama co-produced between Bulgaria and Spain (by our country, the Malagueño Antonio Hens and his company 'Malas Compañías') that tells the story of Victor, a young man raised in Malaga who returns to his country (Bulgaria) to face his roots. There he meets Liuben, an orphan of an ethnic Gypsy who makes a living, among other things, selling fruits next to a ditch. With actress Antonia San Juan as part of the cast, 'Liuben' It is a story about emigration, racism and homosexuality.

The 'Other looks' section will also welcome the presentation of the film 'One night with Adela' which will be assisted by its director and screenwriter, Hugo Ruiz. The tape, which portrays the life of a depressed and disturbed sweep of the night shift of the city of Madrid, can be seen on Sunday, October 29, at 2100 hours at the Casa de la Cultura de Arroyo de la Honey.

Lovers of documentary and classical cinema can enjoy 'Fellinópolis', a look at the great filmmaker Federico Fellini through the eyes of Ferruccio Castonuovo, his trusted assistant, who filmed him between 1976 and 1986. This documentary, directed by the filmmaker Silvia Giulietti, offers unpublished images, filmed behind the scenes and in the sets of films such as' Y la nave va ',' La ciudad de las mujeres' or 'Ginger y Fred'. In addition to this are the memories of those who worked with him, including Lina Wertmuller, Nicola Piovani or Dante Ferretti. "Fellinopolis" shows that there are still secrets to be discovered from the Italian genius. The film will be screened on the same day as the director's 30 years of death on Tuesday, October 31.

As already advanced in the event of the presentation of the poster of the Festival, the work of Monegasque designer David Grimaldi, FICCAB will devote a special session to Paul Lukas, the first-row actor of the Golden Age Hollywood, who won the Oscar Award for the best actor in 1943 and is buried in the Benalmádena cemetery. The cycle will show the tape with which Lukas rose with the coveted statuette, 'Alert in the Rhin', which could not be put in 1973, when Benalmádena's Author's Film Week proposed to pay a tribute to Lukas. And it is that the tape, due to a problem in the port, never arrived in the municipality of Costa Rica. The projection will be complemented by a talk about this Hungarian actor of the writer and theatrical author Carlos Zamarriego.

Finally, FICCAB has scheduled the tape 'On the other side of the river and between the trees', of the zaragozana Paula Ruiz, which directs the actor Liev Schreiber in this adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's novel set in World War II. The film tells the story of Colonel Cantwell, who in the middle of the war faces the news of a terminal disease until an unexpected encounter changes his plans.

The rest of the feature films that will be shown at FICCAB this year will be made public at a forthcoming press conference, where the winners of the City of Benalmádena Film Awards will also be released.

 

Short films

With regard to the short films section to be planned in the House of Culture of Arroyo de la Honey, after a selection among the 1,140 short films received, it has been decided from the organization to expand the number of projections to accommodate more short films. Finally, there have been 29 short films chosen, which make up an eclectic selection where a great diversity of genres and themes has been seen, including fiction, documentary and animation.

Ten short films come from outside Spain from countries such as Mexico, the Dominican Republic, France, Chile or Denmark, works that have been selected at prestigious festivals such as Cannes or Tribeca. The proposals address issues as topical as the war in the Middle East (the Iranian 'The Steak'), LGTBI people in Islamic countries (the Lebanese 'Warsha'), the power of social networks (the Indonesian 'Kumbang') or immigration (the Canadian 'The gold teeth'). The rest are national productions that highlight works that address issues such as women's claim ('If you want me, go'; 'La cajera') or the alzheimer ('Paris 70'), with performances by renowned actors such as Karra Elejalde, Luisa Gavasa or Ingrid García- Jonsson. The selection is completed by comedies with interpretations of comic references such as Raúl Cimas or Javier Bóalalo.

Among these national productions are four short films produced in Málaga, which opt for the award for the 'Best Malaysian short film' sponsored by Cineclub 'Más Madera. A story of bandits directed by Pedro Casablanc (' Sacrilegio '), the becoming of a young immigrant in a juvenile center in Malaga (' Everything goes well '), the story of a girl trapped in a toxic relationship (' Don't leave me like this') or the contact with the beyond in a spiritism session ('Libera me') make up this selection with a Malaysian aroma.
